Netflix’s trans employee resource group held a walkout on October 20 protesting anti-trans comments comedian Dave Chappelle made during his Netflix comedy special, The Closer, released last week. Chappelle’s contract with the streaming service company must be canceled. In response to comedian Dave Chappelle’s controversial comedy special, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos said Chappelle did not cross a line.
Netflix should develop better protocols to prevent hurtful remarks against the LGBT community on its platform. In support of the trans community, we should boycott Netflix until they apologize and take steps to make things right with the trans community. Netflix has a reputation for supporting LGBT rights and equality, so this is disappointing. Netflix is home to groundbreaking LGBTQ stories, but Netflix executives need to listen to their employees, industry leaders, and audiences to live up to those standards. Major corporations like Netflix need to educate themselves more on trans issues.
The use of trans jokes in TV and film as punchlines and scapegoats for ratings in 2021 is alarming. Netflix needs to reassess its comments regarding Chappelle’s special. They need to know that trans people will not take anti-trans remarks lightly. Discrimination has no place at Netflix. #NotOurFunnyMan
